There are three types of cocktail shakers, and most people buy the wrong one first. The cobbler — the three-piece design with a built-in strainer — is the most common starter set pick, yet the one pros almost universally avoid. Here's what each type does and which belongs in your bar.
Most cocktail recipes call for "simple syrup" without specifying which kind. But the two standard versions — 1:1 and 2:1 — differ enough to change how a drink tastes, its mouthfeel, and whether a frozen batch freezes properly.

You need a strainer. You search for one and find two different types — a Hawthorne strainer (the one with the spring) and a julep strainer (the perforated spoon-shaped one). They both strain drinks. Do you need both? Does it matter which you use?
You can use premium spirits, fresh-squeezed citrus, and the perfect recipe — and still make a mediocre cocktail because of the ice. Ice isn't just a cooling mechanism. It's an ingredient that controls dilution rate, temperature, texture, and even flavor. Bad ice degrades all four.
