You've decided you need a refractometer. Maybe you just bought a frozen drink machine and someone told you to "check the Brix." Maybe you're batching cocktails for a party and want to verify the alcohol content.
Here's the difference, when you need each, and whether you should buy one or both.
The Short Answer
A Brix refractometer measures sugar. An alcohol refractometer measures ethanol. They look nearly identical, they work the same way (a few drops on a prism, read the scale), but they're calibrated to completely different scales. Using the wrong one gives you a meaningless number.
If you're buying one refractometer for frozen drink machine use, buy the Brix refractometer. Sugar content is what determines whether your batch freezes to the right consistency or damages your machine.
If you're doing any kind of spirit infusion work or want to verify bottle ABV, add an alcohol refractometer. Budget optical models of each are not expensive, so owning both isn't a big investment.
What a Brix Refractometer Measures
Brix (Β°Bx) is a scale that measures dissolved sugar content in a liquid. One degree Brix equals one gram of sucrose per 100 grams of solution. When you place a few drops on the prism and look through the eyepiece (or read the digital display), you get a number that tells you what percentage of that liquid is sugar.
For frozen cocktails, this number is everything. Frozen drink machines β whether commercial units like the Spaceman & Elmeco or consumer machines like the Ninja SLUSHi β need the batch to fall within 13β18 Brix to produce a proper frozen texture. Below 13, the mix freezes solid and can damage the machine. Above 18, it won't freeze at all.
Common Brix readings for cocktail ingredients:

Notice that last line β straight spirits (vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, tequila) contain no sugar and have a true Brix of 0. But here's where it gets tricky.
The Alcohol Problem with Brix Refractometers
Ethanol has a higher refractive index than water. When you put a spirit-heavy cocktail batch on a Brix refractometer, the alcohol bends the light in a way that looks like dissolved sugar to the instrument. The result is a falsely elevated Brix reading.
If you measure a vodka-heavy batch on an optical Brix refractometer, it might show 8β10 Brix when the actual sugar content is much lower. This can lead you to think your batch is in the safe zone when it's actually too low in sugar and at risk of freezing solid.
Digital Brix refractometers with alcohol compensation algorithms handle this better, but they're not perfect either. The takeaway: Brix refractometers are most accurate on solutions where sugar is the primary dissolved solid β juices, syrups, pre-mixed batches with moderate alcohol. For high-proof, low-sugar batches, account for some upward drift in the reading.
What an Alcohol Refractometer Measures
An alcohol refractometer measures ethanol concentration by volume, expressed as % v/v (volume by volume). This is the same measurement as ABV. When a bottle of bourbon says "45% ABV," that means 45% of the liquid's volume is pure ethanol. An alcohol refractometer reads this directly on a 0β80% v/v scale.
Why this matters for batching: when you're making frozen cocktails, you need to know two things β the sugar content (Brix) and the alcohol content (ABV). Brix tells you whether the batch will freeze to the right texture. ABV tells you whether the batch will freeze at all. Alcohol lowers the freezing point independently of sugar, and a batch above 10% ABV will struggle in most consumer machines regardless of Brix.
For frozen batches, your target ABV for the final mixed batch is 5β10%.
The Sugar Problem with Alcohol Refractometers
Just as alcohol confuses Brix refractometers, sugar confuses alcohol refractometers. Alcohol refractometers are calibrated for solutions of ethanol and water only. They produce accurate readings on straight spirits and spirit-water dilutions. They are not accurate on cocktails containing sugar, juice, cream, or other dissolved solids.
A margarita batch with lime juice and triple sec will give a misleading v/v reading because the sugar and citric acid alter the refractive index. The instrument interprets the extra refraction as alcohol, producing a reading that's higher than the actual ABV.
This means you cannot use an alcohol refractometer to check the ABV of a finished cocktail batch. For that, calculate ABV from the recipe proportions (MixologyRecipe does this automatically on our batch recipe pages).

What About Devices That Read Both?
A few digital refractometers can read both Brix and potential alcohol from the same sample. The Hanna HI96813 reads both % Brix and potential alcohol (% v/v) digitally. It's accurate, fast, and eliminates the need for two separate instruments.
The Milwaukee MA884 also reads both Brix (0β50% range) and potential alcohol (0β25% v/v), with temperature compensation and a 2-second read time.
These dual-purpose devices are convenient, but understand the "potential alcohol" reading is an estimate derived from the refractive index β it works well on simple solutions but has the same limitations as a standalone alcohol refractometer on complex cocktail mixtures.
Optical vs. Digital β A Quick Comparison
Both Brix and alcohol refractometers come in optical (sight glass) and digital versions.
Optical models are analog instruments. You place drops on the prism, hold it to a light source, and read the scale through the eyepiece. They do not need batteries, and work perfectly for occasional use. The downside is that readings depend on your eyesight and lighting conditions.
Digital models give you a number on an LCD screen. They're faster, more precise (typically plus or minus 0.2%), and work in any lighting. If you batch frequently β for a bar, food truck, or catering business β the digital upgrade pays for itself in speed and consistency.
For most home users batching for parties, a pair of optical refractometers (one Brix, one alcohol) is the smart starting point.

If you own a frozen drink machine, you need a Brix refractometer. Full stop. It's the tool that tells you whether your batch will freeze correctly or wreck your machine. An alcohol refractometer is a useful addition β especially for infusion work and spirit verification β but it's secondary for most home bartenders.
